Annex IX of Royal Decree 875/2014 lists particular foreign certificates recognised for navigation in Spain, including specified UK-issued international certificates. The label “ICC” alone does not establish blanket recognition for every jet ski. Ask the operator and, if necessary, the maritime authority to check the document.
Navigation rules off Tenerife
Stay out of marked bathing areas. Where no bathing zone is marked, jet skis may not navigate in the 200-metre coastal strip except to enter or leave a beach perpendicularly at no more than three knots. Use marked launch channels where provided. The three-knot limit also applies in marina channels and sports harbours. Keep clear of hire circuits and organised excursions.
Jet skis may navigate only from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset in good weather and visibility. The maritime captain can restrict an area or suspend use for safety. Check the forecast and the operator’s launch briefing.
Do not chase or cut across cetaceans. Royal Decree 1727/2007 sets an exclusion zone of at least 60 metres and special rules when animals approach unexpectedly. A skipper’s qualification does not make a leisure ride a whale-watching trip.
Equipment, insurance and hire costs
Rider and passenger must wear approved life jackets. The consolidated rule calls for 100 N buoyancy and a whistle. Check the fit, engine stop system, emergency procedure and communications equipment supplied. We cannot treat a handheld VHF as mandatory on every trip without knowing the operating arrangement.
Review the insurance, excess, deposit, fuel and weather cancellation terms in the actual contract. There is no universal €500–€1,000 statutory deposit in the cited rules. Ask for the precise amount before paying.
